6 Intriguing Facts about the Agricultural Industry
There are thousands of facts that make agriculture so interesting! Most facts agriculturist may not even know about and lots of facts non-agriculturists do not know about. Our world is surrounded in agriculture.
Agriculture is not only just a part of our daily meals, but our makeup routines, medicines, candles, paintbrushes, printing ink and SO much more! The list goes on, but I am sure you are already shocked.
Fact One: 30% of the 3.3 million farm operators are women.
The number of women farmers have grown tremendously over the past several years. Within the past 20 years the number of women has actually increased by 20%. 70% of farmers are actually women and most women farmers actually own their own land.
Fact Two: One U.S. farm feeds 166 people annually.
This might sound like a lot of people that one farmer feeds, but as the population continues the grow this raises concern for the amount of food farms need to be producing. By 2050, the global population is to increase by 2.2 billion people. With 2.2 billion more people, that means the amount of food being produced will have to increase by 70%.
Fact Three: Cattle, calves, corn and soybeans are the top 3 U.S. farm products.
There are several animals and produce that is grown in the U.S but these top three are produced the most. These products are very important in all agriculture production, as corn and soybeans are used for primarily livestock feed.
Fact Four: U.S ag products are produced by 87% of family farms
Family farms account for almost all of agriculture production. That probably seems crazy to you, as you mainly only see corporate farms on the television. But many farms are filled with caring families that live off of farming and ranching. Many livelihoods and families are affected when something bad occurs in the agricultural industry. Only 2% of the population is farm and ranch families.
Fact Five: There are over 100 by-products that we get from beef
There are several products that we use daily that many people do not realize where they come from. Dish soap, dog biscuits, floor wax, gum and so many more items come from beef cattle! There is glue, instrument strings and sports equipment that even come from the beef cattle. All these products can come from bone, horns, fats, hide, and intestines.
Fact Six: Pigs can run a mile in 7 minutes.
This is a really fun fact, that people do not even know. I honestly had no idea, as I thought it would take a lot longer to do. Average runners usually cover a mile in 7-10 minutes and many people run a mile within 12-15 minutes. So, the odds of winning a race with a pig may be a lot less than you thought!
As we only covered six facts, that was still a lot to take in for someone in the agricultural industry or someone outside of the agricultural industry. There are still so many to cover, but these are very good ones to think about when thinking about the farmer you come across in the grocery store or at the gas station. Farmers and ranchers provide so much to the world around us that we do not even know about!
